Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Story? Stories, DMs and Vanish Mode in 2026 and 2027

No, Instagram doesn't notify when you screenshot a story, post or Reel. What vanish mode, disappearing DMs and the June 2026 rumour mean for UK users.

Quick answer: No. Instagram doesn't notify anyone when you screenshot or screen record their story, post, Reel, profile or a normal chat. The exceptions sit in DMs: vanish mode alerts the other person if Instagram detects a screenshot, while disappearing photos, videos and Instants now block screenshots altogether.

You've just screenshotted a friend's story and you're wondering whether an alert has landed on their phone. So, does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story? A widely shared post in June 2026 said it would.

It doesn't. This guide shows exactly what Instagram flags, feature by feature, using Instagram's own Help Centre, and corrects the out-of-date advice most guides still repeat about disappearing messages.

What Instagram tells people about screenshots, feature by feature

Instagram only reacts to screenshots in private messages. You can capture anything public, or shared with followers, without the owner knowing.

FeatureDoes the owner get an alert? What actually happens
Stories, including Close FriendsNoNothing is shown to the owner
Posts and ReelsNoNothing is shown
Profiles and highlightsNoNothing is shown
Normal chatsNoNothing is shown
Vanish mode chatsYesThe other person is notified if Instagram detects a screenshot
Disappearing photos and videos in chatsNo alert neededTaking a screenshot is disabled
InstantsNo alert neededInstants can't be screenshot or screen recorded

Screen recording follows the same rules. Recording a story or a Reel triggers nothing, and Instagram stops anyone recording protected content in chats.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story in 2026?

No. On 1 June 2026 a widely shared Instagram post claimed the app had started notifying people when someone screenshotted or screen recorded their story. We found no announcement from Instagram, and its Help Centre still describes screenshot alerts in one place only: vanish mode.

The rumour has history. In February 2018 Instagram confirmed to TechCrunch that it was testing story screenshot alerts, shown as a camera-shutter icon in the viewers list. That test never became a standard feature. Check Instagram's own channels before believing a new privacy feature.

Disappearing photos and videos now block screenshots

This is the change most guides miss. Meta announced on 17 October 2024, as part of its protections against sextortion scams, that people would no longer be able to screenshot or screen record "view once" or "allow replay" photos and videos sent in private messages. They also stopped opening on Instagram on the web, closing the obvious workaround.

Instagram's Help Centre now confirms it. Its page on checking the status of a disappearing photo or video says that taking a screenshot is now disabled for disappearing photos and videos sent in a chat.

What most guides get wrong: they say Instagram notifies the sender when you screenshot a view-once photo. On current versions of the app, the screenshot simply doesn't happen.

The same rule covers Instants, launched on 13 May 2026. These casual photos disappear once friends view them, and Instagram's Instants announcement says they can't be screenshot or screen recorded. Instants also expire after 24 hours.

Vanish mode: the one place you'll get an alert

Vanish mode is the only feature where Instagram still sends a screenshot alert. In a vanish mode chat, messages disappear when someone leaves the chat or turns the mode off. Instagram's vanish mode help page warns that people can still screenshot a message, and says: "You'll receive a notification if we detect they take a screenshot."

There's a UK catch. Instagram says vanish mode may be unavailable in Japan and for countries located in Europe, so you may not see it here at all.

Nothing stops a photo of the screen, either. Instagram points out that someone could photograph a disappearing message with another device, so use vanish mode only with people you trust.

Screenshots and UK law

Taking a screenshot isn't a crime, but what you do with it can be. In England and Wales, section 66B of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 makes it an offence to share a photo or film showing someone in an intimate state without their consent. The Online Safety Act 2023 added it, and it came into force on 31 January 2024.

Meta framed its screenshot block as protection against exactly this kind of abuse. If someone threatens to share an image of you, report the account and keep a record of the messages.

What could change in 2027

The government said on 15 July 2026 that it expects its ban on social media services for under-16s to start in spring 2027. Our view: since 2024, Meta's pattern has been to block capture of private disappearing content rather than alert people about it. With no announced plan for story alerts, expect stories to stay alert-free.

Screenshots aren't tracked, but likes and views are

Nobody can see who screenshotted their story. What every visitor does see is how many people liked a post or watched a Reel, and those numbers act as social proof.

FAQ: Instagram screenshot notifications

Can someone see if you screenshot their Instagram story?

No. Instagram doesn't notify people when you screenshot or screen record their story, and nothing appears in their list of story viewers. A viral June 2026 post claimed otherwise, but Instagram announced no such feature. Screenshot alerts only exist in vanish mode chats, which Instagram says may be unavailable in European countries.

Can people tell if you screenshot Instagram DMs?

Not in a normal chat. Alerts only exist in vanish mode, where Instagram tells the other person if it detects a screenshot. Nobody can capture disappearing photos and videos sent with view once or allow replay, following a change Meta announced in October 2024.

Can you screenshot Close Friends stories without them knowing?

Yes. Close Friends stories follow the same rules as any other story, so the owner gets no alert when you screenshot or screen record one. Your place on the list only controls who can see it. Its owner trusted a small group, though, so think before sharing it.

Does screen recording an Instagram story send a notification?

Screen recording works exactly like a screenshot, so a story, post or Reel sends no alert. Instagram blocks recording of disappearing photos, videos and Instants in chats. Vanish mode is the one place where Instagram may tell the other person about a screenshot.

Can an app show who screenshotted your Instagram story?

No app can, because Instagram doesn't tell anyone about story screenshots, so there's nothing for an outside app to read. Apps that promise it usually want your Instagram login, which puts your account at risk. Keep your password private and ignore them.
